Divorce and The New Year’s Resolution Phenomenon

As we all know, the New Year is the perfect time to make resolutions in an effort to make our lives better, right? Shed a few pounds, eat a healthier diet, read more. What about getting a divorce? Believe it or not, research actually shows this to be true. Many divorce lawyers report it; published New Year’s Resolutions Lists include it; even Google’s top returns for that query state January to be the busiest month for divorce.

So why January? I can only speculate…

  • New Year/New Chapter. Many couples contemplate divorce but tend to put it off for many reasons such as considering the children or giving couples therapy a try. Perhaps by year’s end they feel it’s just the best time to move forward and start fresh.
  • The New Year’s Resolution. The end of a year may seem like the time to begin new things and a time to make changes that you have been putting off.
  • Waiting Until After the Holidays. If children are involved, couples may want to give them a good Christmas before breaking the news. Also, the holiday season is festive and many couples might just feel better about waiting until they pass.

While divorce can certainly be a sad event, it may sometimes be necessary to move on to a new phase of life – no matter what time of year. If you find yourself in need of a divorce lawyer in New Jersey, feel free to email us or call today to discuss your legal needs at (973) 403-9200.
